The new Apple TV production, starring Elle Fanning, starts from a turbulent setting to deliver a sharp, human, and surprisingly light dramedy, without shying away from the weight of the protagonist’s decisions. Based on Rufi Thorpe’s novel and adapted by David E. Kelley, the plot follows Margo, a talented young writer whose routine is turned upside down when she becomes pregnant by a married professor. From that point, the series dives straight into the challenges of an unexpected motherhood, the mounting bills, and the fight for emotional stability.
Elle Fanning delivers one of the most confident and charismatic performances of her career. Her Margo combines vulnerability and strength, balancing physical humor, intimate drama, and sarcasm with a rare naturalness. Michelle Pfeiffer, as mother Shyanne, brings layers of complexity that enrich the mother‑daughter relationship, making it the emotional engine of the story. Nick Offerman, as the absent father Jinx, adds warmth and humor, while the supporting cast creates an eccentric universe without losing touch with reality.
The series stands out by tackling difficult topics – unexpected pregnancy, loneliness, financial instability, and even the world of digital sex work – directly, but without slipping into melodrama. By placing Margo in the world of online adult content, the narrative gains a provocative and contemporary tone, exploring her choices with irony and sensitivity. Even when some moments feel convenient, the consistency of the characters sustains the story, making it funny, uncomfortable, and honest in just the right measure. The first three episodes are already available on Apple TV. ★★★★☆ (4/5)
