Bob Gale assures that ‘Back to the Future 4’ will never be made

The creator of the iconic ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy, writer and producer Bob Gale, broke his silence by responding to the countless speculations about a possible fourth film. In an interview granted to the portal ScreenRant, Gale was emphatic in declaring that, despite the enormous success and the nostalgia that still surrounds the saga, the idea of a continuation is completely out of the question. For him, the story that began in 1985 reached its perfect conclusion in 1990, with the release of the third installment.

The main obstacle, according to Gale, is the inseparable presence of Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly. After the public announcement of the actor’s Parkinson’s diagnosis, the screenwriter emphasized that producing a new chapter without the protagonist would be an artistic affront. “Since the third film, the question we hear most is: ‘When will the fourth one come out?’ The answer is: never,” he said. “Would you like to watch ‘Back to the Future’ without Michael J. Fox? When I ask this question, people immediately see the problem.”

Beyond the human issue, Gale pointed out the concern of preserving the integrity of the work. He believes that a new film would hardly reach the quality of the originals and cited examples of franchises that lost their essence by insisting on merely commercial sequels. The intention, also shared by director Robert Zemeckis, is to preserve the trilogy as an untouched landmark of pop culture.

The saga, which has become one of the pillars of science‑fiction and adventure cinema, follows teenager Marty McFly on an accidental trip to the year 1955, after an experiment by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes wrong. Aboard a modified DeLorean, Marty must ensure his parents fall in love so he isn’t erased from existence, while fighting to return to his time and save his mentor. The cast that immortalized the series includes Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson, Claudia Wells and James Tolkan.
