Almost a decade after the release of Power Rangers (2017), actor Dacre Montgomery broke his silence by commenting on the end of the four sequels that Lionsgate had commissioned. In an interview with MovieWeb, given to promote his upcoming project, Faces of Death (2026), the Red Ranger actor explained that, despite having signed a contract similar to that of The Hunger Games franchise, the films were cancelled after the reboot’s under‑performing results. The film grossed about $142.3 million worldwide, well below expectations for an estimated budget of $100 million, which led the studio to abandon the plan to create an expansive cinematic universe.
The movie’s story followed the classic formula of the series: young people discover they are Earth’s guardians by obtaining ancient power coins that grant superhuman abilities. In addition to Montgomery, the cast included Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Becky G as the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger and RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger. Currently, Power Rangers (2017) is available for digital rental on major platforms, while Disney+ is working on a new series that promises to reboot the franchise in the coming years.
