The title arrives this North American winter for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The roughly fifteen‑minute broadcast highlighted the first‑person single‑player campaign, centered on a dense narrative and a claustrophobic atmosphere filled with psychological horror, the franchise’s trademark.

The setting takes place in the year 2039, when the last survivors of a nuclear war continue to fight in the tunnels of Moscow’s metro. The underground factions have been unified under the Novoreich regime, led by a new Führer — the legendary Spartan Hunter — who promises redemption on the surface but keeps the population imprisoned under strict authoritarian control and propaganda.
The player assumes the role of The Stranger, a recluse tormented by violent nightmares who is forced to return to the metro, a place he swore never to step foot in again. For the first time, the protagonist will be fully voiced, enhancing the story’s immersion.
Developed by 4A Games, a studio born in Ukraine and now composed of professionals from over 25 nationalities, METRO 2039 directly reflects the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
