In 2017, Margaret Atwood saw her dystopian novel ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ come to life in the series ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, which immersed audiences in Gilead, an authoritarian theocracy where fertility had become a commodity. Elisabeth Moss’s portrayal of June/Offred even earned an Emmy and set the tone for the saga. Now, streaming service Hulu extends this universe with the spin‑off ‘The Testaments’, set fifteen years after the original events. The plot follows Agnes MacKenzie (played by Chase Infiniti), a young woman destined to become the wife of a high‑ranking Gilead official, who begins to question the strict rules imposed on women. She studies at a school overseen by the stern Aunt Lydia, where veteran Ann Dowd reappears, and meets Daisy (Lucy Halliday), a Canadian refugee who carries a secret capable of sparking a new rebellion.
Unlike the violent debut of the parent series, ‘The Testaments’ opts for an atmosphere of false stability, using a violet palette that evokes the school “castes” and the complacency imposed by the regime. This visual choice reinforces the sense that oppression persists more subtly, through the ideological manipulation the young women face. Agnes becomes the spark of a powder keg, torn between loyalty to Daisy, who turns out to be a supporter of the revolution, and the influence of Shunnamite (Rowan Blanchard), a student who uses the family name to gain prestige.
Infiniti’s performance demonstrates an emerging talent, a departure from her previous roles, while the early episodes reintroduce Atwood’s world and broaden the discussion about the transition from democracies to authoritarianism. The series adds an extra layer of complexity by exploring different generations and by reflecting, alarmingly, on the fragilities of the structures we consider safe. ‘The Testaments’ proves to be a valuable addition to the ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ canon, staying faithful to the original material and delivering a narrative that, while less visually shocking, provides tension and hope in equal measure. The next episode premieres on April 15.
