Just minutes before the box‑office failure of Power Rangers (2017), Lionsgate had already drawn up long‑term plans to revitalize the beloved series on the big screen, a potential that, according to Dacre Montgomery, ended up being completely wasted. While promoting Faces of Death (2026), the actor, also known for his role in Stranger Things, told MovieWeb that the studio intended an ambitious reinvention of the universe before abandoning it. “There were big ambitions, a lot of creative expansion of the property. I had a lot of fun with the cast, they’re all amazing. It was supposed to be something huge, but the financial return didn’t justify the investment made to keep producing”, he said.
Montgomery also commented on the reboot in development for Disney+, which should keep the franchise alive in the coming years: “I heard they’re starting over again. I think Saban sold the rights. I’m excited about the future. It means a lot to a lot of people. Whoever takes on this project will do a great job, and I had a lot of fun.” The 2017 film earned less than US$150 million worldwide, against a budget of about US$100 million, under the direction of Dean Israelite. Lionsgate had in mind a saga of four films, which would have included the return of Naomi Scott, Becky G, Ludi Lin (from Mortal Kombat) and RJ Cyler as the other Rangers. Today, available for digital rental, the feature follows young people who discover they are Earth’s protectors by gaining superhuman powers.
