Toy Story 5 Pits Toys Against Technology and Promises an Unexpected Ending

The fifth installment of the Toy Story saga will tread a distinct path from the previous chapters. As director Andrew Stanton revealed, the plot will address how technology invades the world of toys, culminating in a less optimistic ending. In an interview with Empire, Stanton detailed that the new film will place Woody and Buzz in front of an unusual threat: a tablet called Lilypad. “When technology arrives, it dominates. This applies to both adults and children. It simply wins”, he said. “We thought of something simple: a child playing with their toys, and suddenly a screen device appears and we watch what happens. That is the starting point of our story”, he added. The director also indicated that the conclusion will be different from the franchise’s usual one. “The central issue has always been how technology replaced real play. Lilypad symbolizes what we are trying to fight against”, Stanton concluded.

The official synopsis already makes the conflict clear: “Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the gang face today’s biggest threat – electronics!” Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return as Woody and Buzz, while new talents such as Anna Faris, Ernie Hudson and Conan O’Brien join the cast. The script was written by Andrew Stanton, known for Wall‑E and Finding Nemo, and the direction will be shared with McKenna Harris, a Pixar artist who worked on Luca and Elemental. Toy Story 5 arrives in Brazilian cinemas on June 18.
